Seeing what’s there before you start

For years, I’ve tried to explain to people how I can “see” a finished project before I begin.  First day in the woodshop yesterday had me going through my process again.  Note the photo of this piece of Maple showing the end.  See all the black lines (spalting) and color?  This is not just a normal piece of wood.  It has some natural character and the potential to be stunning.  Is well worth my time.  If only I had an idea about how to handle that crack …
